I AM GRAVELY CONCERNED THAT THE LANDMARKS PRESERVATION COMMISSION IS PREPARING TO APPROVE THE DESIGN FOR 122 GREENWICH AVENUE ESSENTIALLY AS IS, AND I STRONGLY URGE YOU NOT TO DO SO.
I believe very strongly in the value of landmark designation and the good it does to preserve the unique qualities of a historic neighborhood. However, allowing an 11-story undulating glass-walled structure in a historic district known for its charm, human scale, and detailing seems to run entirely contrary to this goal. How can the Commission ask small property owners to go through the additional time and expense of ensuring that all details of their buildings are maintained in a historically appropriate fashion when a developer is allowed to build a structure with no connection to the historic character of this neighborhood whatsoever?
THE PURPOSE OF HISTORIC DISTRICTS IS TO PROTECT AND MAINTAIN THE UNIQUE CHARACTER OF HISTORICALLY AND ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT NEIGHBORHOODS, USING CLEAR AND CONSISTENT CRITERIA. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE HOW APPROVAL OF THE CURRENT DESIGN FOR 122 GREENWICH AVENUE IS CONSISTENT WITH THAT GOAL, AND APPROVING IT RUNS THE RISK OF UNDERMINING PUBLIC CONFIDENCE IN THE LANDMARKS SYSTEM.
PLEASE INSIST THAT THE DEVELOPER OF 122 GREENWICH AVENUE CHANGE THIS DESIGN TO REFLECT AND RELATE TO THE CHARACTER OF THE GREENWICH VILLAGE HISTORIC DISTRICT, OR REJECT THE DESIGN ALTOGETHER.
