Community Board #2 Landmarks Committee
delivered by hand
Dear Chairs Derr and Diether:
I STRONGLY URGE THE COMMUNITY BOARD TO ENDORSE THE PROPOSED SOUTH VILLAGE HISTORIC DISTRICT, AS SUBMITTED TO THE LANDMARKS PRESERVATION COMMISSION BY THE GREENWICH VILLAGE SOCIETY FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION.
This important proposal to preserve this wonderful but increasingly endangered neighborhood has been endorsed by every affected community group and block association, nearly every local elected official, city, state, and national preservation organizations, Italian-American groups, and hundreds of local residents and business and property owners. The proposal has tremendous momentum, but it is critical that the Community Board now lend its clear and strong support.
The proposed boundaries come from more than four years of study and research on buildings in the area, input by Andrew Dolkart, one of the city’s most highly respected architectural historians, and consultation with every impacted block association and with the Community Board itself. I hope the Community Board will support the district as proposed and submitted, rather than weaken the case for this landmarking effort by calling for changes now.
The South Village is a truly special but seriously endangered neighborhood. As we all know, getting the Landmarks Preservation Commission to act to preserve it is a huge challenge, one which will require as clear and broad of support for the proposal as possible. I urge the Community Board to be a part of making that a reality, rather than standing in its way – PLEASE SUPPORT THE PROPOSAL!
