Celebrating 100 Years of Jane Jacobs
With Activism, Education, and

Jane Jacobs, at press conference to save the village at Lions Head Restaurant,
Hudson and Charles Streets, 1960.

Dear friend,

Jane Jacobs would have turned 100 years old today.  Perhaps no other single person informs and inspires GVSHP’s work and mission as profoundly as Jane Jacobs, who served on our board of advisors until her passing in 2006.

Jane Jacobs fought to extend landmark protections to the entire Village.  GVSHP continues that fight, helping to get more than 1,100 buildings landmarked in Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo.

Jane Jacobs extolled the virtues of a vital mix of local small businesses.  GVSHP continues that work, with our Business of the Month program, our Annual Village Awards, and working towards legislation that would protect small businesses.
Jane Jacobs pushed back against mega-developments and large institutions that would overwhelm neighborhoods and eliminate diversity.  GVSHP continues that effort, opposing oversized expansion
plans by NYU and other large institutions and big developers.

Jane Jacobs argued for human-scaled neighborhoods that emphasized street life and communal spaces.  GVSHP has fought for contextual zoning that keeps development in scale, and worked to maintain and enhance public spaces.

Jane Jaco
bs called for allowing communities to determine their own fates, rather than developers or government planners imposing their vision upon them.  GVSHP works every day to monitor more than 6,500 building lots in our neighborhood for development plans, and connects the public to the process for determining their future.

On the centennial of Jane Jacob’s birth, let’s celebrate her legacy and recommit ourselves to working towards human-scaled neighborhoods which preserve our history, diversity, and vitality.

Here’s a few ways you can
do that:

        You help make it happen!
