Equinox Gyms has yet again erected a gigantic, illegal, 3-story high billboard across the façade of their building at Greenwich Avenue and West 12th Street in the Greenwich Village Historic District. As they did four years ago, the offending sign was erected without landmarks or building permits, making it not only an eyesore, but potentially dangerous. Like four years ago, GVSHP has reached out to Equinox and its corporate parent Related Companies to urge them to remove the billboard, and we have reached out to city agencies, which have issued multiple violations to the scofflaws.
But instead of being a good neighbor, Equinox and Related are digging in their heels, refusing to take down the sign, and brushing off scores of complaints from neighbors and average New Yorkers who do respect the law. They're treating the fines generated by the city’s slowly turning bureaucratic wheels as simply a cost of doing business.
Please join us in telling Equinox and Related Companies to respect the law and their neighbors, and take down this illegal billboard!
Here’s how you can help:
Sign the petition to the heads of Equinox and Related urging them to remove the billboard -- click here.
Share the petition with friends and neighbors and ask them to sign
Let Equinox know that you think they should take down their illegal billboard at 97 Greenwich Avenue -- call Equinox CEO Harvey Spivak at 212.677.0180, and call the Equinox Gym at 97 Greenwich Avenue at 212.620.0103 and ask for the General Manager. Be respectful, but let Equinox know that disrespecting our neighborhood and our landmarks protections is wrong.
GVSHP will continue to push city agencies, Equinox, and Related to remove this illegal billboard. Thank you for your help!
