Re: East Village/Lower East Side Historic District
Dear Chair Tierney:
As a supporter of landmarks protections in the East Village I am very happy that the East 10th Street Historic District has been designated. However, I am disappointed that the Landmarks Preservation Commission did not prevent permits being issued for a rooftop addition at 315 East 10th Street, in the middle of the newly designated historic district.
Unfortunately, this is not the only loss to the historic character of this neighborhood in recent months. Since the East 10th Street and East Village/Lower East Side Historic Districts were proposed applications have been filed for alterations to an early 19th century house at 80 East 2nd Street, an 1852 rowhouse at 331 East 6th Street has been demolished, and the cornice has been removed from the D. & J. Jardine designed French flats at 51 East 2nd Street. This points to the need for the LPC to move more swiftly to protect the vulnerable and endangered historic resources in this neighborhood.
I therefore hope that the Commission will move forward as quickly as possible in hearing and designating the proposed East Village/Lower East Side Historic District, to prevent any further unsympathetic changes to this neighborhood’s irreplaceable historic fabric.
