Re: Preservation of the East Village
Dear Chair Tierney:
I am deeply concerned about the impending loss of the early 19th century house at 316 East 3rd Street, which the Landmarks Preservation Commission has declined to save, as well as the recent loss of the mid-19th century house at 331 East 6th Street, in the proposed but not yet designated East Village/Lower East Side Historic District. These come on the heels of the destruction of many, many other historic buildings in the East Village in recent years.
I am very encouraged that the Commission is considering historic districts in the East Village, that the Commission was willing to expand those proposed districts in response to feedback from preservation organizations and Councilmember Mendez, and that the Commission has indicated that they will consider other areas of the East Village in the future.
However, time is of the essence, and the Commission must move swiftly and broadly to preserve the fragile historic character of this neighborhood. I therefore strongly urge you to move ahead quickly with scheduling a hearing and voting to designate the currently proposed East Village/Lower East Side and East 10th Street Historic Districts. I also strongly urge you to move swiftly to consider other areas of the neighborhood as well, and to protect endangered individual buildings in the neighborhood as well, so that more buildings like 316 East 3rd Street, 326 & 328 East 4th Street, and 35 Bowery, which the Commission declined to landmark, are not lost.
