Dear Chair Tierney:
Thank you for landmarking 486 and 488 Greenwich Street. I am deeply gratified that the Landmarks Preservation Commission has landmarked seven of the thirteen federal houses in Lower Manhattan proposed for designation by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Please keep going!
There are six remaining houses from this proposal, first submitted to the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2003. GVSHP and the NYLC have provided the Commission with all the documentation and information necessary to move ahead with designation of the remaining six — I hope you will act upon these as well.
Federal houses make up such an important part of Lower Manhattan and New York City’s history. These charming houses form the historic backbone of many of our neighborhoods, and retain a link to a past to which our connections are ever-more tenuous. As almost-unprecedented development pressure sweeps over many of our neighborhoods, the need to preserve these structures of human scale and detail are all the more important. I look forward to the Commission moving ahead with the remainder of these houses soon.
