Dear Chair Tierney:
I am deeply gratified that the Landmarks Preservation Commission has landmarked nine of the thirteen federal houses in Lower Manhattan proposed for designation by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and the New York Landmarks Conservancy in 2003. Please keep going!
Considering that the Commission recently chose to decalendar 94 & 94 ½ Greenwich Street, 57 Sullivan Street and 2 Oliver Street are now the only remaining houses from this proposal on which the Commission has yet to take action. GVSHP and the NYLC have provided the Commission with all the documentation and information necessary to move ahead with designation of these houses, which I urge you do as soon as possible.
Federal houses make up such an important part of Lower Manhattan and New York City’s history. These charming houses form the historic backbone of many of our neighborhoods, and retain a link to a past to which our connections are ever-more tenuous. As almost-unprecedented development pressure sweeps over many of our neighborhoods, the need to preserve these structures of human scale and detail are all the more important. I look forward to the Commission expeditiously moving ahead with designation of 57 Sullivan Street and 2 Oliver Street.
