Support bill to close landmarks loophole
GVSHP has been proud to work closely with Councilmember Rosie Mendez on Intro. 542-A, a bill she has introduced aimed at closing the glaring loophole in the landmarks law which exempts pre-existing buildings permits from landmarks regulations once a building has been landmarked. This problem is perhaps best illustrated by the former PS 64 at 605 East 9th Street, where the owner has used pre-existing permits to strip architectural detail from and deface the building even after landmark designation. This issue has also recently come to the fore in the South Village, where GVSHP has pointed out that advance notice of potential landmark designation by the city gives owners the opportunity to get building permits which then cannot be undone even after landmark designation takes place.
After languishing without a hearing in the City Council for more than two years, the bill is now finally being given a hearing on Tuesday, June 23rd.
