Dear Mayor DeBlasio,
I strongly support the recommendations of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation in its report about the landmarking process and pre-designation activities, and urge you to make changes to ensure that bad actors cannot demolish or compromise buildings being considered for landmark designation.
Protecting historic buildings is essential to New York City’s economy and quality of life. Under the practices of the prior administration, developers and other owners who sought to subvert or get around the landmarking process were given many tools to do so by being given advance notification that properties were even being thought about for landmark designation well in advance of any action being taken to protect them. The law is clear, as it should be, that property owners must be informed in advance of any action being taken to formally consider their property for landmark designation. But the extra-legal process implemented in recent years weakens the system by allowing bad actors to take advantage and get around the process.
I urge you to take these steps to help ensure that our city’s historic heritage is protected and preserved.
