Dear Chair Tierney:

I am very glad that 128 East 13th Street appears to be safe for the forseeable future. However, I urge the Commission to follow through on its 2006 hearing and vote to designate this building a New York City landmark, as it so richly deserves.

Given the building’s incredible history, there could be few finer candidates for landmark designation. As the City’s only remaining horse and carriage auction mart, which served the Belmonts and Vanderbilts, as a former machine shop where women were trained on assembly-line work during World War II, and as the long-time studio of Frank Stella, one of the late 20th century’s most influential artists, the building embodies so many layers of New York’s social, architectural, and cultural history.

128 East 13th Street deserves the permanent protections landmark designation would offer. I ask the Commission to act soon to ensure this wonderful building will remain a treasure for future generations to appreciate.
