Dear Chair Tierney:

I URGE YOU TO DESIGNATE THE OLD P.S. 64 AT 605 EAST 9th STREET AS A NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

The old P.S. 64 is of incomparable historic, architectural, and social significance.  Charles B.J. Snyder’s beautiful and innovative H-plan Beaux-Arts Baroque-Revival design, along with the incredibly storied history of educators, entertainers, artists, and politicians who worked, spoke, and performed here, makes for a building crying out for landmark status.  This building also serves as an embodiment of much of the recent social and cultural history of the East Village/Lower East Side, having housed the Charas/El Bohio Cultural Center for more than 20 years.

Because the owner of the building has expressed clear hostility towards landmark designation, and your swift action is needed to ensure that the building is saved.  Please ensure that the old P.S. 64 is landmarked, and that the Commission demonstrates that buildings which meet the test for landmarking can be saved, regardless of whether or not an owner may seek to destroy it.
