Dear Chair Burden:
I am very concerned about the way our city’s zoning code currently treats community facilities, and the impact it has upon my community. The current system allows community facilities to be much larger than any other new building in many types of residential neighborhoods, places no checks upon how many can concentrate in one community, and does not require that community facilities fit in to the context of their surroundings. Currently proposed changes to regulations governing community facilities does not address these issues, but should.
I urge you to correct this oversight. I fully support the recommendations of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, which has been endorsed by Community Board 2 & 3, Manhattan, specifically in regard to reforming community facility regulations. Those recommendations include:
These measures will help ensure that neighborhoods like Greenwich Village and the East Village can continue to grow and thrive even as their basic character is maintained. It will ensure that the integrity of communities are maintained while continuing to allow community facilities to be developed throughout the city, but in ways which help ensure their compatibility with the neighborhoods in which they are located.
I strongly urge you to support these measures and to draft and introduce legislation which would make them a reality. I look forward to hearing back from you about how you will help to make this happen.
Sincerely,
