Mayor Bloomberg is proposing to impose fees for permits for the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC). For the first time ever, owners would have to pay an extra fee to do the right thing and abide by landmarks law. With this disincentive, landmarks violations will skyrocket, and our neighborhood character and integrity will be eroded.

Mayor Bloomberg is also proposing to cut the budget for the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Over the last ten years, LPC’s budget has shrunk, forcing them to regulate 20% more buildings and process 63% more applications with 21% fewer staff! The LPC has only one compliance officer to check for landmarks violations for the entire city! Now, as we are pushing to expand our landmarks protections, they are proposing to cut the LPC’s budget even further, crippling LPC’s ability to consider new designations and protect the buildings currently landmaked.

The proposed 2003 budget is now open for public comment,
and will soon be voted on by the City Council.

Let our city officials know that landmarking preserves neighborhoods, increases investment, promotes tourism, and enhances civic pride. These cuts will do great harm to our community. Please tell the Mayor and the Council Speaker that we should be preserving New York City’s history, not eroding landmarks protections.
