Dear Chair Tierney:
While I am very pleased that the Landmarks Preservation Commission has begun to survey the proposed South Village Historic District for consideration for landmark designation, I am very worried about the potential loss of important pieces of the neighborhood in the interim like 178 Bleecker Street.
The owner of 178 Bleecker Street is seeking permission to demolish the building and replace it with a totally out-of-scale, inappropriate 8-story building. This would be a terrible blow not only to the proposed South Village Historic District and its "main street," Bleecker Street, but it would also be an unwelcome intrusion to the neighboring MacDougal-Sullivan Gardens Historic District.
I hope the Landmarks Preservation Commission will act as soon as possible to protect the entire South Village, but most especially to prevent the destruction to its character which would come from the demolition of buildings like 178 Bleecker Street.
