Dear Chair Tierney:

Thank you for beginning the process of considering the proposed South Village Historic District!  This is an enormously important piece of New York City’s history and a neighborhood with incredible architectural, cultural, and social significance.  I look forward to seeing the entire neighborhood designated as a New York City historic district, and I hope that the survey the Commission will be doing this spring and summer will be a first step towards making that happen.

As you know, the South Village continues to face increasing threats of demolition of its historic buildings and new development and alterations which could compromise its character.  Recognizing that the Commission must respond to such threats all across the city, I nevertheless strongly urge that the Commission move as quickly as possible to complete its promised survey of the area west of 6th Avenue and begin the process of surveying the remainder of the proposed district and moving ahead with designation as soon as possible.

I am heartened by the LPC’s commitment to take this action and hope that it will lead to further action soon. Thank you for your willingness to protect the precious historic resources of this neighborhood.
