“MEAT MARKET BLOOMS” GALA BENEFIT
TO BE HELD AT STUDIO OF DIANE VON FURSTENBERG;
FUNDS TO BE RAISED FOR PRESERVATION EFFORTS
AND STUDY OF RELOCATING ENDANGERED FLOWER MARKET TO MEATPACKING DISTRICT
New York – Save Gansevoort Market, a project of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation dedicated to preserving the Meatpacking district, will hold a gala benefit on Thursday, May 20, at 6:30 pm at Diane Von Furstenberg’s studios at 389 West 12th Street. The event is co-hosted by Diane Von Furstenberg and Meatmarket businessman and Save Gansevoort Market Co-Chair Florent Morellet. Funds raised will support ongoing preservation efforts in the Meatpacking district, and a study being commissioned by Save Gansevoort Market to explore the feasibility of relocating the Flower Market, currently being displaced from its home at 6th Avenue and 28th Street, to the Meatpacking district.
Save Gansevoort Market (SGM) was founded in 2000, and spearheaded the successful effort to secure historic district designation for the area. In 2003, the Gansevoort Market Historic District became New York’s 82nd and newest historic district. SGM is an alliance of preservationists, community leaders and business people who are concerned with protecting the area’s unique mix of market jobs and new commercial opportunities, and hope to stave off inappropriate development that would displace these businesses. SGM seeks to reinforce the area's traditional market use and scale, by working in partnership with the Flower Market Association of NYC to study the feasibility of relocating Manhattan's wholesale flower market to the Gansevoort area. This effort is supported both by the flower and meat wholesalers, and stands to safeguard hundreds of jobs in both industries, as well as preserve the historic integrity of this thriving neighborhood.
